Advanced Design Communication II : Parametric & Generative Modelling

This course offers an opportunity to learn an interdisciplinary investigation of design theory as connected to digital technology and its applications to current developments in practice and research within architecture and design. The purpose of this course is to develop a method of design communication with various digital technologies that would enhance the processes that lead to the generation of meaningful architectural form. The course encourages students 1) to explore creative uses of digital technologies, 2) to exercise computational complexity, and 3) develop analytic representations in their design process.

Through this course, students are expected to achieve a comprehensive level of 1) understanding various design principles, 2) generating 2D & 3D geometric models, and 3) employing integrated design strategies for maximizing the quality and productivity of design artifact.

DESCRIPTION

Parametric & Generative Modelling - Architectural Skin Design:

Making an architectural skin that responds to various external stimuli has been a design problem for architects since we began building shelters. This challenge seeks for creating a beautiful external skin that is adaptable to various stimuli including sunlight, wind, raining, user interaction and so on. The context is an existing courtyard of the school of architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, HI. The intent is to encourage creative approaches to design architectural skin for the courtyard.
