Arch 490/690 Design with Artificial Intelligence (AI)

ARCH 490/690 – Design with AI is an elective course that introduces students to AI-driven architectural design by integrating creativity, emerging technologies, and human insight.

The course is designed for students from diverse backgrounds, and no prior experience in artificial intelligence, architecture, or design software is required. Through a series of guided exercises and design explorations, students learn how AI can support and augment architectural thinking rather than replace human authorship. The course focuses on four core areas: program generation with AI, spatial and formal massing development, AI-assisted three-dimensional modeling, and the application of AI workflows to architectural design decision-making. Emphasis is placed on understanding the design workflow, critically evaluating AI outputs, and strategically integrating computational tools into creative processes. Students gain hands-on experience with contemporary AI design supports while developing an informed perspective on their opportunities and limitations.

By the end of the course, students will understand the fundamentals of AI-assisted design workflows, demonstrate practical proficiency in using AI tools for architectural exploration, and produce an original, AI-driven architectural project portfolio that reflects both technological experimentation and individual design intent.
